La probl?matique de recherche du Projet Caravel s'articule autour du probl?me de l'int?gration d'information dans des r?seaux constitu?s de sources d'information h?t?rog?nes et autonomes. Les sources d'information comprennent des sources de donn?es ou de programmes et elles peuvent ?tre r?pliqu?es. Les sources de donn?es peuvent ?tre structur?es ou semi-structur?es. Trois grands probl?mes sous-jacents sont abord?s: (1) offrir un mode d'acc?s uniforme ? un ensemble de sources d'information via une vue int?gr?e, (2) faciliter la construction et la maintenance d'entrep?ts de donn?es coh?rents et (3) offrir des modes de navigation dans un r?seau d'informations qui soient adapt?s ? diff?rentes cat?gories d'utilisateurs. Les syst?mes d'information pour l'environnement constituent un domaine d'application privil?gi? du projet Caravel.

The Caravel project deals with the general problem of information integration in networks of autonomous,
heterogeneous information sources. Information sources include data sources and program sources and may be
replicated. Data sources may be structured or semi-structured. In this context, Caravel's objectives are:
(i) to provide uniform access to information sources through an integrated view, (ii) to ease the
management of consistent data warehouses, and (iii) to offer various information browsing modes adapted
to various kinds of users. One major application domain of the Caravel project is environmental
information systems.
